Wedding Celebrant – How to choose the perfect Celebrant for your big day!

Choosing your wedding celebrant is like choosing your partner: you want someone who gets you, who listens to you, who makes you feel good, and who can make you laugh. You want someone you like and trust, who will answer all your questions (even the ones you haven’t thought of yet!) And you want to be sure they have the confidence and experience to deal with anything that might happen on the day (yes, life happens, even at weddings!). But with more than eight thousand registered wedding celebrants in Australia how do you choose? Follow these top tips to find the one that’s right for you:

Tone & Style: The Celebrant really does set the tone and style for the Ceremony so choose someone whose personal style reflects yours. Are you having a fancy wedding at a swishy venue or a rustic vibe in a garden or barn? Are you thinking formal and sophisticated or more relaxed and casual? Aim to match your style aspirations to the personal style of the Celebrant. Even before you meet, you can tell a lot about the Celebrant from their website and social media. You’ll soon know if they’re right for you. One of my grooms called it “affinity” – isn’t that lovely!

Recommendations: A personal recommendation is always great, but you can also rely on the testimonials of other couples. Look at our FB pages and websites to see the reviews and comments from previous brides. And you can always ask the Celebrant for some testimonials. A happy couple saying “we loved you Diana, you were amazing” is worth more than anything I can tell you!!

Creativity: Nobody wants an ‘off-the-shelf’ ceremony, even for a budget wedding. Look for a Celebrant who will fully personalise your Ceremony. There are only a couple of things your Celebrant must, by law, include to make it legal; apart from that, the Ceremony should be authentic to you, reflecting who you are as a couple. From a five-minute “pash & dash” ceremony covering the legals only, to something fabulous and formal, or something unique and quirky, it’s your Ceremony so do it your way! Make sure your Ceremony is truly yours. If you’ve always dreamed of an Alice in Wonderland wedding or a Celebrant dressed as a Pirate, just ask! (Please…that would be such fun!!)

Price: Obviously price is a consideration, but you’ll always find that the Celebrant is one of the cheapest items in your wedding budget. And it’s the one thing you absolutely have to have!! (You can’t get married without one!) The usual range for a Celebrant is $550 - $850 in most cities - I’m happily in the middle of the range. There are a few above and a few below. Saturdays in Wedding Season (October to March) always get booked up first, so don’t waste time once you’ve decided. And don’t be shy to ask about a discount if you’re getting married in winter or on a weekday. But do remember that it’s not all about price. You’ll soon forget the few dollars you spent or saved on the Celebrant, but you’ll remember the Ceremony forever.

Once you’ve found a Celebrant that you like arrange a meeting or call for a chat. Do they sound warm, confident, and relaxed? Are they happy to answer all your questions and to contribute ideas of their own? Do they feel like a friend already? Yes? Then go ahead and book.
