Wedding insights and advice
from Dr Diana Carroll, Celebrant.

Same Sex Marriage – Love is Love, Groom & Groom, Bride & Bride!

YES! Marriage equality is now law in Australia. If you’re a Bride and Bride or a Groom and Groom, I would love to be your Celebrant! Whatever your vision for your Wedding Ceremony, let me make it happen for you! I have enjoyed a long involvement with the LGBTIQ community and was always a supporter of marriage equality. A year before the new laws came in, this is what one of my lovely couples said after their wedding: “The wonderful Dr Diana Carroll made it all official and so beautiful – even had the crowd cheering for marriage equality!” Lauren & Jonny, Kuitpo Forest.

In 2018, I was thrilled to be one of 40 Celebrants from around Australia who took part in the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade under the banner “Celebrants Celebrating Marriage Equality”. It was an amazing experience to be in the Parade and share the love and excitement of this year’s special 40th Anniversary Mardi Gras.

It is so exciting that gay couples can now stand-up and take their marriage vows! And because same-sex marriage is still so new, you really can do it your way. If you’ve always dreamed of a ‘traditional’ wedding, now it can be yours. Or if you want something very different, something creative, colourful, and exciting, we can do that too. Whatever you choose, it can now be true to you and celebrate your love. There really are no rules, so dress up and make the day your very own!

Let’s remember that it was only on Thursday, 7th December 2017, that the Australian House of Representatives voted to make all couples equal in marriage allowing the relationships of LGBTIQ people to finally be shared and celebrated in marriage. Importantly this meant the wording of the Monitum was changed. This is a statement that your Celebrant must, by law, say at your Ceremony. The Monitum now includes the sentence “Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of two people, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.” It previously said “…of a man and a woman…” and so was problematic for supporters of marriage equality.

Literally within minutes of the historic vote in Parliament I received a phone call from Joy to book her wedding. Joy and Dimity have been together 19 years and celebrated their love with a Commitment Ceremony 16 years ago. This year, on the anniversary of that day, I was delighted to finally join them in marriage. It was a wonderful wedding ceremony and truly a day to remember, for Joy and Dimity and all their family and friends. Many of their guests had also been present at their Commitment Ceremony all those years ago and have shared their journey.
